On a shield shaped silver metal and epoxied device 1 1/8 (2.86cm) in height blazoned as follows: Argent, a cross couped Gules surmounted by a bendwise Maltese cross Murrey enfiled with a triangular annulet Argent (Silver Gray), overall a mullet of the fourth; all within a bordure of the last. Attached below the shield a maroon scroll inscribed with EDUCATE PREVENT RESTORE in silver.
The Red Cross is emblematic of medical aid. The color maroon is associated with the Army Medical Department. The maroon Maltese cross emphasizes these elements through color, shape and placement upon the red cross. The triangle is a traditional shape for dentistry and its interlacing of the Maltese cross reinforces the relationship between the Army Medical Department and dentistry. The superimposed silver star signifies the location of Fort Sam Houston, in the heart of Texas. The white background of the shield is reminiscent of a tooth to further convey the dental field.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved 17 January 2017.
